Exclusive Interview!

How would you describe yourself?

In a word: efficient. It's why I'm so successful. Even the largest, most popular companies can go under if they become inefficient, while a well-managed small business can achieve rapid success.
There's more to me than just efficiency, though, or even business in general. I love what I do, but I also have other interests. I like dancing, snowboarding, and reading. When I have the time, I love to go camping; no excessive technology, no mod-cons, just me, a tent & the wilderness. I even like video & computer games, but the trouble is that they're very difficult to play casually, just from time to time. If you really play video games, they take up a lot of your time & concentration, and I just don't have that much to spare, for better or for worse. [Laughs]

What do you think is the most important thing you've learned so far?

Always think from the other person's perspective. If you don't, you're doomed to failure. I'm not saying you should ignore your own needs & feelings, but if go around only thinking about yourself, you'll never get anywhere in business any more than in your personal life. Sadly, this is something that many executives ignore. When you're in charge of a company, you have to consider the wants & needs of each employee, and balance them against the needs of the firm itself. You also have to consider the other person when you're making deals with other companies. Ultimately, it's both a necessary skill and the right thing to do.

What would your idea of the perfect man be?

Well, now, if I revealed that here, it would take all the fun out of it, wouldn't it? [Laughs]

Thank you for your time. In closing, is there any advice you'd like to give budding entrepreneurs?

Never give up. I know, I know, you've heard it a thousand times before, it's old, it's trite, and no one really believes it any more. Nevertheless, I really can't stress enough the importance of this concept. Here's a plain, simple fact: sooner or later, you are liable to make a mistake, to fail at something. Now, you're faced with a choice: do you give up and run away from it, or do you try different methods until you succeed? Every time you give up, it gets harder to succeed the next time. So, if you want success, I mean really want it, DON'T GIVE UP. There are thousands of different ways to tackle any problem, and you only need to find one. Whatever you want to achieve, in business or just life in general, keep trying until you do.

Eve Wright. My most successful manga drawing ever.

As usual, she started out as a pencil sketch, and was traced with a Zig Millennium pen. After that, she was scanned onto the computer at 300 dpi, transferred to my laptop, and The GIMP did the rest. I used the Fuzzy Select and Selection to Path tools to fill the colors, then used the Path tool, Select from Path and Gaussian Blur to create shading & highlights. YEAH, I ACTUALLY DID SOME HIGHLIGHTS FOR ONCE!!! I think it made Eve a much more successful picture than her predecessors.

AND, for the first time EVER, I GOT THE HAIR TO LOOK RIGHT!!!!! Man, I couldn't believe it. I really pulled on my visual memories of various manga art I'd seen in th past, bringing forth every detail I could summon, and managed to apply it properly. I was ECSTATIC. I used to suck at hair - at least, the non-cartoony or non-stylized hair - but now, at last, I can do it for real.

SO, in the end, I finished her off, used the Gradient Fill tool to create the background, and saved her as a JPEG, 95% quality, about 190KB. Now, at last, after all this time, I feel that I can FINALLY do REAL MANGA. WAHOO!!!!!
